Arrest Record Keeping

The Identification and Criminal History Section was established during the 1972 Legislative Session as the central repository for Criminal History Record Information (CHRI) for the State of Washington. It consists of fingerprint-based records and disposition data for crimes and gross misdemeanors which are submitted by enforcement agencies and courts across Washington. Washington Arrest Records are found among them; they are compiled from arrest warrants issued by the concerned authorities throughout the state. To access such documents, one may visit the individual local courthouses or the state’s Division of Criminal Investigation.

Arrest records are public records in Washington. Under the Criminal Records Privacy Act, conviction CHRI may be made public to anyone without restriction or consent of the subject. However, the general public is only entitled to access conviction records and sex offender status. Other than self-checks, vital documents and complete criminal information will be released only to employers, law enforcement and other approved state agencies. Criminal record searches can either be by name or fingerprint, the latter being considered higher powered. Name-based requests cost $17 per name while fingerprint searches are $26 each plus an additional fee of $13 for fingerprinting which is offered at the Washington State Patrol office in Olympia.

The State also accepts requests for this information over the Internet through Washington Access to Criminal History (WATCH) from the public for a search fee of $10 but it is limited to conviction-only information. This greatly compromises the completeness of information as Arrest Records are procedurally filed whether or not conviction or incarceration resulted. No worries, several private data providers have stepped forward for this online.

The Washington State Patrol has established a central website where you can access forms and information regarding criminal history background checks and conviction records which have occurred in the state of Washington. Visit for more information.

Conducting a Records Search

Since Washington arrest record information is conducted by the person’s name, you may receive information about other people with the same name. Duplicate records may also contain close matches to the desired name. There may be more than one arrest record for a given name as well.

Washington arrests which are still waiting for trial and are less than one year old are also available by request, including any pending dispositions and dates. The Washington State Police criminal history files contain information which is not open to the general public, so requests for information may not be complete.

A non-refundable $17 fee is paid for each record requested by mail. If you want a fingerprint search, there is a non-refundable $26 fee. In addition, a $10 processing fee may be applied to some Washington arrest records requests. It takes 7 to 14 business days to complete a request. If there are no matches in the Washington state police database, you will receive a report that says so.

Anyone who requests Washington arrest reports is recorded as well. Your name, the target of your search, and the date the search was conducted are kept on record. This is required by Washington State legislation.

At the time you request the search you must submit payment of $10 for each name, regardless of the search outcome. You may pay by credit card or by establishing a subscription account with the state of Washington. Non-profit organizations are exempt from payment if they are searching for information on employees or volunteers, or looking for evidence of crimes against children or vulnerable adults.

Do you know your neighbors? Your coworkers? Your friends? It is not uncommon to live and work among strangers in today's world; but you don't have to. Why? Thanks to the Federal Information Act, all U.S. citizens have access to public criminal records. Below, we discuss just what the purpose of a criminal records search, why you need one, and the

Criminal records are record accounts of all activities to be processed through the criminal justice and law enforcement bureaus; so, a criminal records search is for these public records. Criminal background records are categorized by type and jurisdiction, and held at various jurisdictions to which they pertain, as subject to nature of crime, locale, and other relating factors. Directly related to this is the criminal records search.

A criminal records search for criminal background information can be done on any individual. Perhaps, you are concerned about a new neighbor, a teacher at your child's school, a friend, or a colleague. Whoever it is-you want to find out if they have been involved in a criminal activity, to protect yourself and your family from potential future harm. Consider that many sex offenders live unnoticed in family neighborhoods, while many will reoffend at some point after they have served time or penalty for their crime. They could live amongst you, and you don't even know it. Why don't you know? Many people don't realize two things: first, that it is their right to search for this public criminal record information; and second, that it is easy, convenient, and confidential to do.
