The Division of Criminal Investigation (DCI) Identification Department of South Dakota serves as the State’s central repository for criminal arrest records. It is responsible for processing fingerprint-based background checks including South Dakota Arrest Records. By state law, any person has the right to request criminal history information. A Computerized Criminal History (CCH) system is also available to criminal justice entities 24 hours daily via telecommunication.
The public can also access criminal history information at the DCI but only fingerprint-based checks are offered. The DCI provides free fingerprint kit which must be used by the applicant and the official authorization and release form must be completely filled out and signed. The service fee is $24 per check. Federal charges, juvenile offenses, sealed records, minor traffic violations or out-of-state information are not included in the search. The processing time by the DCI is not readily known.

Directly related to this is the criminal records search.
A criminal records search for criminal background information can be done on any individual. Perhaps, you are concerned about a new neighbor, a teacher at your child's school, a friend, or a colleague. Whoever it is-you want to find out if they have been involved in a criminal activity, to protect yourself and your family from potential future harm. They could live amongst you, and you don't even know it. Why don't you know? Many people don't realize two things: first, that it is their right to search for this public criminal record information; and second, that it is easy, convenient, and confidential to do.
