Arrest Record keeping and access to information

Among other things, the function of the Maryland Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services is to respond to requests for criminal history background checks for criminal justice, employment and licensing purposes. This role is tasked to its Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS) unit with its Criminal Justice Information System Central Repository where all criminal records including Maryland Arrest Records across Maryland’s 23 counties are maintained.

Only police officials are authorized to conduct a complete Maryland criminal background check with an arrest record at the CJIS. Private employers may conditionally be permitted to receive background checks on prospective employees. Signed release is not necessary but fingerprints are required to run a search. Twenty-two out of its twenty-three counties requires application to be made in person. To retrieve Maryland Arrest Records, applicants must be fingerprinted at a Maryland State Police Station. The fees are $5 for each fingerprinting card and $18 for each state background check. Employer’s authorization number must be produced in applying for employment background checks.

All records pertaining to Maryland arrests can be viewed by the hiring authorities and there is absolutely no limitation in release of arrest information by the various enforcement agencies of the state. Maryland statistics reveal that there had been almost 22,846 arrests in 2006. This is almost 15% higher than the national index. Drug violations are the cause for majority of the arrests, with other petty crimes like disorderly conduct and traffic or ordinance violations adding to the crime statistics substantially.

Information restrictions

Except for sensitive information, especially if it concerns the security of the state or country, you can access the full details of a specific MD arrest record. Juvenile arrest records are normally restricted in Maryland as in most other states of the United States of America. The arrest records contain information of detention by the police and other law enforcement authorities, including the military personnel. The arrest records usually reveal the complete status-including the outcome. An arrest does not automatically end in imprisonment. The arrested person may be dismissed or acquitted as well.

Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS)

Proper background checks can be conducted by contacting the Criminal Justice Information System (CJIS), which is a part of the Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services (http:/ /www.dpscs.state.md.us/publicservs/bgchecks.shtml). The concerned department maintains all the identification records along with the necessary fingerprints.

What all you should know before searching

The case number, trial date and case name need to be entered within the form itself. You can get copies of all official documents for $0.50 a page or obtain a certified document by paying $5. You also need to certify that you are permitted under SG § 10-616(q) to inspect the arrest records and obtain relevant documents. The clerks of county courts can provide you with the required information via telephone if you know the case number. However, you need to visit the court house personally if you want to conduct a search based on name only.

Do you know your neighbors? Your coworkers? Your friends? It is not uncommon to live and work among strangers in today's world; but you don't have to. Why? Thanks to the Federal Information Act, all U.S. citizens have access to public criminal records. Below, we discuss just what the purpose of a criminal records search, why you need one, and the

Criminal records are record accounts of all activities to be processed through the criminal justice and law enforcement bureaus; so, a criminal records search is for these public records. Criminal background records are categorized by type and jurisdiction, and held at various jurisdictions to which they pertain, as subject to nature of crime, locale, and other relating factors. Directly related to this is the criminal records search.

A criminal records search for criminal background information can be done on any individual. Perhaps, you are concerned about a new neighbor, a teacher at your child's school, a friend, or a colleague. Whoever it is-you want to find out if they have been involved in a criminal activity, to protect yourself and your family from potential future harm. Consider that many sex offenders live unnoticed in family neighborhoods, while many will reoffend at some point after they have served time or penalty for their crime. They could live amongst you, and you don't even know it. Why don't you know? Many people don't realize two things: first, that it is their right to search for this public criminal record information; and second, that it is easy, convenient, and confidential to do.
